Kurosaki Ichigo had the unusual ability to see ghosts, mostly this ghosts were nice and kind, but some of them, called Hollows, were monsters that feed on the energy of people and ghosts, and for consequence vanishing them!
Since this is a terrible act there are the shinigamis that have the duty establish order by purifying Hollows and send purified souls(nice ghosts) to Soul society.

Ichigo met Rukia(a shinigami) which in her last resource on an attempt to purify a Hollow, gave half her powers to Ichigo so he could defend his family, but this foolish act of Rukia went wrong because Ichigo was to powerfull and draw all her shinigami powers. Ichigo then becomes a Shinigami himself and as anyother he has to complete his duties...
